Is Your Pet Well Adjusted?

Chiropractic is a drugless method of health care. Most people associate chiropractic care with back problems only. This is a misconception. Chiropractic deals with the nervous system that is housed inside the spinal column. The spinal cord carries all the nerves that go to every organ and muscle in the body. These nerves exit the spinal column through vertebra, which are the individual spinal bones. Chiropractic care maintains that adequate nerve supply is vital to the proper functioning of the entire body. When the vertebral bones are misaligned, even very slightly, they lose flexibility and affect the nerves and the flow of nerve energy. Chiropractors call these small misalignments “subluxations” or "fixations".

A misalignment or subluxation is caused by trauma such as slips, falls, normal play, over activity, repetitive movements, obesity and many other physical stresses. Drugs and physical or emotional stresses are other causes of subluxations. As animals age, stresses naturally accumulate in their spine. Some animals that carry loads such as riding horses will subluxate as a result of these forces on their backs; working dogs are also subluxation suspects as there are so many stresses placed on their bodies.

A chiropractic adjustment is aimed at correcting the subluxation and restoring the proper functioning of the nervous system. Chiropractic thus works to eliminate the cause of the problem and not just simply treat the symptoms. If you have a pebble in your shoe (a physical problem) that is causing your foot pain, you don’t need to take an aspirin to cover up the pain…you need to remove the pebble from your shoe (a physical solution to the problem). A subluxation is a physical problem that has to be treated with a physical movement for correction - it cannot be corrected with drugs.
All kinds of pets and farm animals are potential chiropractic patients; from gerbils to racehorses, any animal that has a spine should be considered for alternative health options.

There are many diverse problems that respond to chiropractic care: lameness, neck and back pain, epilepsy, older animals with stiffness and pain, bed wetting in dogs, and many other diseases.

One of the most exciting things that we see happen in almost all of the animals we treat is an improvement in the animal’s attitude. Owners are constantly describing how good the animal feels and performs after an adjustment.

Chiropractic care takes time, since we are allowing the body to heal itself after the proper nerve functioning has been restored. Animals recover very rapidly as a rule, but older animals and more serious problems take more time. As with any condition or patient, the speed of recovery depends on many factors. Some problems are so serious that chiropractic will not completely solve the problem.
Just as it is important to maintain regular yearly checkups, it is important to make sure that the spine is kept flexible and in optimum condition.
